Description

Mikuni TM42-6 HSR Carburetor for Kawasaki KLR 650 — Key Points

Performance Benefits

  • Significant performance improvement over the stock carburetor.Faster throttle response with no hesitation or flat spots when properly tuned.
  • Potential for second-gear wheelies and improved acceleration.
  • Flows 17 CFM more air than the Mikuni TM40-6.
  • Features a roller-bearing slide for smoother operation.
  • Best performance when paired with a performance muffler and a modified airbox.

Required Modifications and Included Parts

  • Silver anodized airbox adapter for fitting the stock airbox.
  • Anodized aluminum spacer with an O-ring seal to reposition the OEM rubber carburetor mounting flange.
  • Throttle cables and a 1/4-turn quick-action throttle.
  • Pre-installed jetting intended to provide a good starting tune.
  • Special size 30 accelerator-pump nozzle installed by Mikunioz.
  • Additional jets supplied to accommodate different tuning requirements.

Airbox and Air Filter Requirements

  • The stock airbox must be opened up to increase airflow.
  • A performance exhaust muffler is recommended for maximum power.
  • A POD filter requires a different inlet sleeve option

Choke Options

  • The OEM KLR650 choke will not work with this carburetor.
  • Two options are available in dropdown menu:
  • Knob-style choke assembly for motorcycles without factory crash bars.
  • 200 mm choke cable with a universal bracket for motorcycles with crash bars.
  • The choke is reportedly rarely needed under normal conditions.

Installation Considerations

On KLR650 models with a single frame bar above the carburetor:

  • Fit the supplied 10 mm-wide, port-matched rubber spacer to move the carburetor back for starter motor clearance.
  • Some motorcycles may require material to be removed from the upper engine-mount frame bracket and its rear weld.
  • Shorten the airbox rubber snorkel to compensate for the spacer.
  • Use a zip tie looped over the frame to support the carburetor if the snorkel pulls it downward.
  • The rubber snorkel should gradually reshape with engine heat.
  • Installation may require additional adjustment and clearance checks.

Jetting and Fine-Tuning

The supplied jetting is generally suitable out of the box.

  • Tuning can vary depending on:
  • Exhaust system.
  • Altitude and climate.
  • Fuel density and octane.
  • Camshaft specifications.
  • Cylinder-head porting.

If performance is disappointing, check:

  • Pilot jet size.
  • Needle clip position.

The carburetor must be removed to make main-jet changes or perform certain jetting checks, making tuning more labor-intensive.

Overall Recommendation

  • The Mikuni TM42-6 HSR is presented as the best performance option for the KLR650 among the TM40-6 and TM42-6 choices.
  • It offers greater airflow and potentially stronger acceleration, but requires airbox modifications, careful installation, and appropriate tuning to achieve its full potential.
You will instantly experience way better throttle response, improved smooth acceleration, increased horsepower and torque.  Plus the bonus of better fuel economy. You will enjoy this new carb but do be sure to hold on tight on your first test ride as she may try to spit you off!
