Description
This Mikuni TM42 Pumper single carburetor conversion kit is designed for Yamaha SZR 660 models that wish to retain the original air-box. Due to the placement of the TM42 carburetor's right-side cable connection bracket, which obstructs the OEM air-box, an alternative kit featuring a custom-fitted left-side throttle assembly is available for compatibility with the OEM air-box. Given that the gas tank does not provide sufficient space behind the carburetor for a filter, a POD filter must be installed overhead, where ample space is available once the air-box is removed. To effectively set up this new configuration, it is necessary to procure a solid U-bend or a flexible reinforced vacuum pipe from another source, which will attach to the TM42’s 65mm spigot (typically 2 1/2″) to create a U-turn back over the carburetor, ultimately connecting to a POD filter of the largest possible size. The POD filter should be secured by means other than solely relying on the connection to the carburetor.
Additionally, this kit is offered in a more economical TM38 option, also intended for use without the air-box. For those wishing to utilize the OEM air-box, the TM40 or the previously mentioned TM42 standard kit for use with a POD filter is available. These kits can be found as separate listings, along with options for other 660 models.
The TM42 Pumper has established itself as our most remarkable upgrade across all brands in the 600cc and larger big thumper segment, delivering significant performance enhancements for all Yamaha 600 models. Although the overhead space constraints of the air-box make this carburetor a challenging fit for the SZR 660, the effort is undoubtedly worthwhile. Conducting wide-open throttle tests with both the filter installed and removed will help ascertain whether there is adequate filter area to meet the carburetor's requirements. This same evaluation will also assist in determining the most suitable main jet options provided. To utilize the OEM air-box, it will be necessary to create a cover plate to seal off the two air-box entries, converting it to accommodate the riveted single alloy funnel, as depicted in the product image. This funnel can be easily connected to the rear of the new carburetor using a compatible silicone automotive connector, which should be sourced separately.
